Try Windex or ammonia - works well in soot.

I just had a fire which has completely tainted my limestone fireplace surround. Because the stone is so delicate, most products are inadequate and harmful to the stone. First, I clean my stone to the normal TileLab but noted that there is a black spot on the rock above the opening, because the limestone that the cover is so porous. Then I tried a ratio of 3:1, for a new product called Krud Kutter that I have for the stone, cheap and safe in the Lowe's Hardware Stores found in the driveway cleaning. WOW this thing is so good that I am on the walls and moldings on the fireplace and remove the soot used without difficulty. Even things clean soot on the grout between the limestone and marble mantle in the cream at home. It is clear that this material is to be the case, on your deck, too.

I always have the sodium phosphate and a wire brush on the stone fireplace. Works great. Get him in the building market.
